Sustainability by Design: How Lightware Builds Efficiency and Longevity into its Products
We have published our second voluntary Sustainability Report, showing how energy efficiency, product longevity and responsible material use are increasingly embedded in the company’s product development decisions.
Covering 2024–2025, the report was prepared with reference to the GRI Standards and also sets out our priorities for the next phase of our sustainability journey.
Engineering With the Environment in Mind
Environmental responsibility is embedded in Lightware's product development process from the earliest stages. By utilising high-efficiency DC–DC converters operating at over 90% efficiency.
While some competitors use solutions that consume up to 27W of power per device under full load, Lightware systems operate with a power consumption of only 10–12 watts under the same conditions. In a larger system, this can result in an annual energy cost saving of up to 15,000 euros. Energy efficiency is therefore not only an environmental benefit, but also a clear economic advantage.
Built-in software platforms such as Event Manager and the LARA room automation system enable occupancy-based control of meeting spaces, automatically switching off devices in unoccupied rooms. Modularity further extends the sustainability of each product: in 2025, approximately 96% of the 980 units returned for service were successfully repaired and returned to active use reducing waste and extending product lifetime.
Packaging and Procurement: Reducing Impact at Every Stage
From the second half of 2025, Lightware's leading product lines including the Taurus UCX, Taurus TPX, Taurus TPN, OPTX, and OPTN use exclusively paper-based packaging, with cables shipped in compostable, PLA-based bags. Where possible, supplier packaging is reused for outbound shipments, and returned product packaging is retained for future use.
On the procurement side, Lightware has used the SiliconExpert database since 2022 to monitor component compliance with REACH and RoHS requirements and manage end-of-life risks. Suppliers are held to a Code of Conduct covering environmental impact, resource efficiency, and waste management, with a formal ESG-based supplier assessment framework currently in development.
Energy, Emissions, their Response to Climate
Reported Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions totalled 285 tCO₂e in 2025, compared with 319 tCO₂e in 2024. The change was influenced by the relocation and the resulting shift in the company’s energy profile, although gas consumption remained an area requiring further attention.
Our next priorities include establishing a Scope 3 emissions measurement framework, developing a climate strategy, strengthening eco-design practices and carrying out product lifecycle assessments.
Sustainability is not a box-ticking exercise for us. It shapes how we design our products, how we run our offices, and how we build relationships with our supply chain partners. Our second report reflects genuine progress, but it also maps out where we need to go further. Beyond the Products
While Lightware’s products represent the area where we can have the most significant environmental and social impact, our sustainability approach extends well beyond product development. The report also outlines Lightware’s commitments and practices in responsible employment, human rights, employee wellbeing, community engagement, stakeholder dialogue, responsible procurement and business integrity. Together, these areas form a broader sustainability framework designed to support responsible operations and long-term value creation across the company and our value chain.
