Apple’s M-series MacBooks typically consume two USB tiers internally, but the MacBook Neo uses three tiers by itself, out of the USB specification’s maximum of seven. This leaves less room for docks, extenders, hubs, and peripherals, which each add more tiers and can quickly exhaust the USB tier budget.
A typical USB chain includes the host with its internal tiers, followed by active cables, extenders or hubs, and room peripherals. Each element adds to the tier count, risking device detection and system stability if not managed properly.
The MacBook Neo’s two USB-C ports both consume three tiers but differ in capabilities. The USB 3 port supports charging, DisplayPort video, and USB 3 data up to 10 Gb/s, while the USB 2 port supports charging and USB 2 data up to 480 Mb/s but no DisplayPort video. This difference is important to avoid mistaken assumptions about compatibility.
To help manage these challenges, we offer USB-C cables designed to minimize added tiers.
